The Wee Boorachie studio and shop, a four star Visit Scotland attraction which contains a working water wheel and a working Knit Studio. Situated on the Deeside Way in the heart of Royal Deeside. Adjacent to Crathes Castle and on the banks of the River Dee the site hosts an art gallery, three complimentary retail outlets and a very appealing and well supported restaurant/coffee shop.
The venue attracts walkers and cyclists. families visiting the popular children’s park, and train rides or those just out for coffee/lunch and a bit of retail therapy.
Dedicated to nurturing existing and emerging UK Designers and Crafters, The Wee Boorachie promotes and supports creative talent, giving UK producers an outlet for their products, enabling them to reach the north of Scotland market and to enhance both their income and their contribution to the national economy. The Wee Boorachie sells only quality pieces, handmade across the UK and is actively leading the way in promoting Contemporary Scottish Craft. The Wee Boorachie sells metal, stone and woodwork; offers a large selection of unique and original home accessories; markets ceramic, glass and textile goods including clothing and accessories. Uniquely it features a knit studio where visitors can watch the creation of knitted fabric on a large manual commercial knit machine and can commission individual exclusive pieces which suit their colour, design and fabric preferences.
Having taken over the business three years ago, I have significantly changed the appeal, atmosphere, layout and brightness of the shop, maintaining the product lines which appeal to and retain the existing customer base. I have now enhanced and supplemented the merchandise range and attracted an additional newer younger customer base. The Wee Boorachie is now online! The new website enables existing customers, particularly those from outwith the area who have visited the shop and seen the quality of products available, to purchase goods directly.
Regrettably The Wee Boorachie experienced rapid and extensive flooding as the waters of the Dee rose to record levels on 30th December 2015. The shop was swamped by 5/6 feet of water within an hour! All stock was sadly effected and business ground to a halt. Devastated by the destruction of the shop, its contents and surroundings we did not have the best start to 2016! We are now working hard to get the shop back up and running. We hope to regain access to refit the shop Begginging of May 2016. All going well we hope to reopen at the end of May begging of June 2016; bigger and better than ever! With lots of new and exciting suppliers, fresh and vibrant new displays and many new promotions for the year ahead.
The Wee Boorachie offers both product sales and onsite production. The shop is an ‘experience’ as well as a retail outlet.
With the two manual commercial knit machines we have you will alwasy see one in action in our knit studio. We engage hugely with our customers not only in providing information and advice on our product portfolio and the technology of knit but also in exploring with them the history of the building and the surrounding area; explaining the background and development of The Wee Boorachie as a craft producer and outlet over the last 15+ years and, via our feature world map, we positively interact with people from across the country and world, letting them pin where they are from and where our products are going to end up.
Located in a beautiful setting, amidst other quality attractions and facilities The Wee Boorachie is an integral and developing part of a stimulating day out at the Milton of Crathes.
